// HOW SCHOOL ZONING WORKS IN NEW YORK

New York is the largest public school system in the country. The New York Department of Education is divided into 32 school districts and serves more than 1 million students in more than 1,500 schools.

Any child (from 5 to 21 years) has the right to receive free public education. The student is assigned to the respective school on the basis of his place of residence. The child does not need a green card or social security number to register for school.

Due to the growing number of people and the popularity of school education, it is not always possible for a student to attend one of the nearby schools. In this case, the child will be placed on the waiting list, and the selection committee of the Department of Education will refer him to another, neighboring school.

// PRIMARY SCHOOL (AGE: 5-9 YEARS)

Primary school education lasts until the 5th grade. Upon reaching five years old, the child is sent to kindergarten. This means that if a child is 5 years old at the end of September, October, November or December, then he can start school at the same September.

If nearby district schools are overcrowded, your child will be redirected to one of the neighboring schools with free space.

In some secondary public schools nursery-kindergartens for babies are also available, which, as of December 31, are only 4 years old. The program is 2.5 hours or 6 hours, 20 minutes a day.

Children aged 5 to 10 years can register directly at their school, while older children (11+ years) must attend the admissions office . Consultants at the admissions office will help you find the right school options and submit the necessary documents to them. The admissions office is open from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 15:00.

Most applications for admission are required in March, but if you want to get a place in a popular school, it is better to apply as early as possible.

To determine your school district, click on search or call 311 (212-NEW-YORK – for calls outside of New York).

To register a child at school, you will need a vaccination certificate, a birth certificate or passport, and records of attendance at other schools. Children enrolled in individual educational programs (IEP) must also provide the above documents.

In addition, the city will need two documents confirming that the child lives in New York. The place of residence of the child is the home of his parents or legal guardian. Confirmation of the place of residence may be a utility bill or any other official document with the specified home address on it.

For non-residents in New York’s public high schools, tuition fees may be required. However, non-residents cannot enroll in specialized schools or take part in special programs for gifted children.
